Successful Thesis Defense

This past Friday, I successfully defended my thesis, titled “Multi-domain multi-material topology optimization of a roller coaster vehicle bogie subject to multi-axial fatigue constraints”. The journey to this achievement has been as dynamic as the roller coaster I’ve been working on.

Embarking on this research adventure, I delved into the intricate world of roller coaster engineering, aiming to enhance the heart of these thrilling rides. The defense, much like a roller coaster ride, had its twists and turns, and I am thrilled to share that the committee found my exploration of multi-domain, multi-material topology optimization considering fatigue truly exhilarating.

Over the past two years, I’ve had the pleasure of collaborating with esteemed organizations, including the Government of Canada’s National Research Council department, SNC-Lavalin, and Dynamic Structures. These experiences have not only deepened my understanding of practical engineering challenges but have also added exciting elements to my professional journey.

As I transition to the next phase of my career, I look forward to applying theses skills and insights gained during my research endeavor. My goal is to continue pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in mechanical engineering.

Thank you to everyone who has been part of this thrilling ride, including my supervisor Dr. Il Yong Kim and the Structural and Multidisciplinary Systems Design group. I would not have been able to complete this task without your support. The following post has been shared on the SMSD website (and can also be found here):

“We are thrilled to extend our heartfelt congratulations to Dylan Eisen for the successful defense of his thesis titled: “Multi-domain multi-material topology optimization of a roller coaster vehicle bogie subject to multi-axial fatigue constraints.” The committee commended Dylan for the exceptional reception of his research.

Over the past two years, Dylan has been an invaluable part of our SMSD family, and it has been a pleasure to collaborate with him. We extend our best wishes to Dylan as he embarks on the next phase of his professional journey.”

I’d also like to acknowledge the following people who have gone over the top to support me along this ride:

  • David Lo, Jeffrey Gosior, and Dominic Tsang of Dynamic Structures

  • Heidi, Barry, Justin, and Oakley Eisen, and Melody Marcelo

  • Hugo Teare, Liam King, Liam Swain, Nate Smith, Ryan Lagler-Clark, Jeremy Burleton, Kevin Volk, Sam Iyengar, Maxym Dubczak, Becca Fifield, Katie Thom, Mia Simmons, and Maxi Rott
